Top Ten Thursdays

It’s that time of the week again! Time to countdown from ten! It’s like New Years Eve every week here on the Red Hot Blog!

In honour of Valentine’s Day, we’re counting down the top ten romantic comedies (rom com). Now, please keep in mind these are rom com’s, not just romantic films. Or else The Notebook would be #1. Judge if you must. I love that movie. Now, let’s get to it!

1. When Harry Met Sally

In the world of rom-coms, WHMS is the OG, the original gangsta. If you are a rom com fan, no, a MOVIE fan, you need to see this movie. Harry and Sally spend years as friends before they finally admit their true feelings. Winnie and Kevin? Ross and Rachael? Pam and Jim? Joey and Pacey? Exactly. Original gangsta’s.

2. Love Actually

This film is a who’s who of English actors and intertwines numerous love stories throughout London. Each character’s story has enough substance, depth and humour to stand alone, and together the movie leaves us feeling like love is possible for all. One of the best uses of a pop music soundtrack in a rom com. Love is all around…and so is Christmas (see the movie).

3. Sixteen Candles

Maybe it could only happen in the movies, but when Molly Ringwald’s character Sam finally gets a kiss from her crush (Jake Ryan, swoon!), the most popular guy in school, girls everywhere were given hope. Ditto for Anthony Michael Hall’s character Ted getting to spend the night with the school’s most popular girl. Only thing that could ruin the moment? Waking up with your headgear on. Throw in two sets of screaming grandparents, a space cadet sister who is getting married, a promiscuous exchange student, two parents forgetting your birthday and the whole grade nine class paying to see your underwear, and you will have a day in the life of Sam. Girlfriend earned that kiss! Choosing my favourite John Hughes movie is like choosing a favourite kid: I love them all…but I’m leaning towards Sixteen Candles secretly.

4. 10 Things I Hate About You

If that title doesn’t scream rom com, I don’t know what does. One of Heath Ledgers earliest roles, and also one of his only comedic roles, 10 Things is based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, with Julia Stiles as the Shrew. Ledger, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, really shine in this teen love fest and show why their success in the movie business continued into their adult lives. Who wouldn’t want Godon-Levitt learning French just to woo you? Or how about Ledger running around the bleachers, declaring his love for you with the whole school watching? Count me in!

5. Notting Hill

Hugh Grant has become the king of the rom com, and this film is a good example of why. Grant falls in love with Julia Robert’s movie star character, and she actually falls back. Rhys Ifans stands out as the messy, lewd and lovable roommate who can’t seem to find a shirt that fits or write down a phone message. Again, great soundtrack.

6. Chasing Amy

As with most Kevin Smith films, the writer/director/actor shows us all just how damn smart he is. Ben Affleck and Jason Lee play best friends, who are also room mates, that write comic books together. Life is peachy until one day Affleck falls for Joey Lauren Adam’s character. The snag? Joey’s character is a lesbian. Smith is one of those rare writer breeds that is able to make a rom com that graphically discusses sex, relationships (both romantic and friendship) and leaves the viewer thinking long after the credits roll.

7. Clueless

As if I wouldn’t put this on the list! As if! One of the first roles for Donald Faison and Paul Rudd, who have gone on to make us swoon and laugh in I Love You Man and Scrubs. Alicia Silverstone embodies Cher Horowitz perfectly, and in her quest to bring love to two lonely teaches, she stumbles through her own love life until finding her match right on her doorstep. Literally. The film is hilarious in its ability to make fun of itself and takes unlikable characters and makes them likable. It also gave us such stellar terms as Betty, Barney, Baldwin, Phat, Buggin, Slammin and Monet. Educational and entertaining.

8. Never Been Kissed

Drew Barrymore plays Josie, an aspiring journalist whose big break comes when she is sent back to high school to go undercover as a students and get the deets on the life of a present day teenager. To bad that Josie’s coolness has not improved much since her own teen years as Josie Grossy, the social outcast of the school. In steps Josie’s underachieving brother, played by David Arquette, who again becomes the coolest guy in high school and gets the entire school on team Josie. All is well until Josie and her English teacher fall in love. Roh Row!

9. Knocked Up

Sometimes you find love in unlikely situations. Like, when you’re an up and coming TV anchor, get crazy drunk one night, go home with an unemployed slacker, get pregnant and find out you both love each other. I wouldn’t suggest it, but that’s how Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen find love with each other in Knocked Up. If you like fart jokes, sex jokes and romantic comedies, you’ll love Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up. Also, call me. We’ll hang out.

10. The Wedding Singer

Adam Sandler has a mullet. Drew Barrymore’s fiance wears pink sports coats and white pants. Billy Idol is the biggest celeb. I love the ’80s. I also love this movie. Sandler and Drew Barrymore have found people to marry. Unfortunately, it’s not one another. How will it all end?! Well, you can probably guess. It’s a rom com after all. But, still totally worth watching. Also, you get to see an 80 year-old woman singing Rappers Delight. Seniors rock!
